Since starting this Pink Ribbon Joey pouch Campaign in October 2008 I have had the privilege of hearing so many wonderful stories from those of you who have nursed and/or lost loved ones or fought your own battle against it!
It’s been much more emotional than I anticipated and quite lovely in so many ways. I’ve appreciated you sharing your lives with me. Thank you!
One such beautiful Nurse (midwife) called me to buy a Pink Joey® pouch last week. Her name is Belinda. In 2006, at 32, a mother of two young boys she casually went to the doctor thinking she had a hormonally related lump in her breast. Within 24 hours her world was turned upside down and she found herself sitting in front of a surgeon discussing a mastectomy.
Having only just explained to her little boys that ‘grand-pa had gone to heaven’ (having just died of cancer) Joshua looked at her and declared “Mummy not going!”
That was good enough for Belinda who then put in a staggering fight as everything seemed to go wrong for her (infections, multiple portacaths, heart complications etc, etc..).
Today, healthy again, she is proud to be a survivor and working back on her midwifery ward in Sunshine welcoming new babies into the world!
She tells her story in the hope that young women will hear it and go to the doctor if they have any kind of lump. “Get it checked out!!” she says! “Don’t dismiss it”, “You’re not too young”!
What pulled her through?
As is often the case, so much love and support from her family, friends, colleagues and employer of 10 years!
DO YOU HAVE A VERY SICK FRIEND? - After talking to Belinda, I stumbled across an article in this months NOTEBOOK Magazine (Oct. p.72) called "How to Help a Sick Friend." It's often difficult to know isn't it? It tells the story of a woman fighting metastatic breast cancer, Rosetta Muscat, who is brave enough and honest enough to lovingly explain to us "...friends all say 'call me, let me know if there’s anything I can do' when of course, there’s so much they can do but it's difficult to ask." She delightfully lists some PERFECT suggestions for us. It's worth a read if you can get hold of it! (Thank YOU Rosetta for your courage & willingness to be vulnerable and let people know!)
I'm a registered nurse. My mum, also an RN and midwife, died of breast cancer. I miss her. Strangely, today more than ever and it's the 10th anniversary!! This campaign is personal for me.

In memory of mum, my gorgous family joined me a week ago in an exciting, fun and very PINK Launch of the PINK Nurse's Joey pouch Community Fundraiser!! We all had the greatest mum who was never 'dying' because she was so busy living right up until the very end!!

For those of you who don't know me, I am the nurse inventor behind the Nurse's Joey Pouch. In 2003 I invented the world's first alternative to 'stuffed pockets', cluttered neck lanyards, old fashioned aprons and rather unattractive travel bum bags (eek)! Nothing else EXISTED that could also efficiently carry my own PDA/ipaq!!

In loving memory of my mother, Marjorie Lillian Miles (nee Fawckner) RN/midwife, who trained at Prince Henry's Hospital in Melbourne and fought a nine year battle with BREAST CANCER, I've decided to turn my NURSESheart PINK!!
In consultation with the healthcare industry, my family and I have decided to extend my range of pouches and proudly support the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) by manufacturing and selling PINK Nurse's Joey Junior pouches! In Australia 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85! This will affect ALL NURSES! Whether as victims, relatives, friends or carers, so let's do what we can NOW to find answers and sponsor HOPE!
